What instrument is used to measure the range of motion of a joint?

The goniometer is specifically designed to measure the range of motion (ROM) of joints in the body. This instrument provides precise angles of joint movement, allowing clinicians to assess whether a joint is functioning within normal limits or has restrictions due to injury, surgery, or other conditions. By placing the goniometer’s arms along the segments of the joint and measuring the degree of movement, healthcare professionals can track a patient's progress in rehabilitation and determine appropriate interventions.

In contrast, a stethoscope is used for listening to body sounds, such as heartbeats or lung sounds, and is not related to measuring motion. A sphygmomanometer measures blood pressure, which is distinctly different from assessing physical joint movement. An electromyograph measures the electrical activity of muscles and is not related to joint mobility.
